Our Partners
Creating Opportunities
Helping children start a new chapter
The Books for Kids Foundation promotes literacy among all children with a special emphasis on low-income and at-risk preschool-aged children. Books for Kids creates libraries, donates books, and partners with literacy programs to develop the critical early foundation and skills which young children need to be successful in life.
Addressing childhood literacy is part of the DNA of our Homewood Suites by Hilton brand. The more than 300 North American hotels participate in literacy events in their communities, including book readings and fundraisers, utilizing the brand’s Lewis the Duck book series, which helps explain travel to young children. The series now includes three installments: Lewis the Duck and His Long Trip, Lewis the Duck Goes to Canada and Lewis the Duck Goes to Mexico. Its current partnership with Books for Kids includes four libraries throughout the United States.
Creating the next generation of hospitality entrepreneurs
DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. In 2012, Hilton Worldwide and DECA will focus on developing a Hilton Worldwide scholarship program for emerging talent as well as participating in the Collegiate Entrepreneurship Academy, part of DECA's International Career Development Conference.
Access to education builds a strong future
In 2012, Hilton Worldwide became the hotel industry partner of Room to Read, a global organization dedicated to promoting and enabling education through programs focused on literacy and gender equality in education. Room to Read believes all children, regardless of gender or background, have a right to education, and by empowering children through this lifelong gift, they help people around the world achieve their full potential.
Opportunity and education can ignite a strong future for any child, and our partnership with Room to Read focuses on providing a pathway for economic opportunity among our most vulnerable communities. Our current efforts help create opportunities for young people in Delhi, India through a holistic education and library program. Together with Room to Read, we're funding girls' education, publishing local language books for young people and building 30 school libraries over the next three years.

Strengthening Communities
Making giving easy and meaningful for our team members and guests
GlobalGiving is a leading international charity fundraising website that connects donors to global organizations and supports the exchange of funds needed to improve communities around the world. Each organization in GlobalGiving's database is vetted by a team of global experts against rigorous standards to ensure it has the capacity to manage financial contributions and make a measurable difference in their communities.
Hilton Worldwide partners with GlobalGiving to connect to these organizations, in every corner of the globe, that are serving our local communities both day-to-day and in moments of crisis. This partnership helps facilitate donations from team members and provide Hilton HHonors members with opportunities to donate cash or points to projects that align with our Travel with Purpose focus areas of opportunity, community, culture and sustainability.
A key focus of our partnership is providing donation channels for disaster relief, and in 2011, Hilton Worldwide team members and guests responded with more than $1 million to emergencies in Turkey, Thailand, Japan, and the United States.
Supporting voluntary principles to address child trafficking and exploitation
In 2011, Hilton Worldwide became the second U.S. hotel company to sign ECPAT's Tourism Child-Protection Code of Conduct supporting its voluntary principles to prevent child sex tourism and trafficking. As a subscriber to ECPAT's Code, Hilton Worldwide implements policies that condemn child trafficking and exploitation and provides training to help team members identify and report illicit activities. We also look for ways to raise awareness about ECPAT and the Code among customers and other stakeholders.

Celebrating Cultures
Supporting cultural experiences and field trips for students in need
DonorsChoose.org is an online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help students in need. Founded in 2000 by a social studies teacher in the Bronx, DonorsChoose.org is an online portal where public school teachers describe specific educational projects for their students, and donors can choose the projects they want to support. After completing a project, the donor hears back from the classroom they supported in the form of photographs and student thank-you letters.
At Hilton Worldwide we believe a strong education is the foundation for a child's journey to success and opens up a window to the world. Our partnership with DonorsChoose.org helps deliver on our Travel with Purpose focus to celebrate cultures by inspiring cultural exchange and experiences for young people. In 2011, we worked with our Hilton HHonors members and DonorsChoose.org to support field trip projects for more than 4,500 students across the United States and continue this support through other creative programs.

Living Sustainably
Reducing waste and saving lives, one bar of soap at a time
As part of Hilton Worldwide's commitment to live sustainably and reduce our waste output by 20 percent by 2014, we are partnered with the Global Soap Project, a nonprofit organization that recovers and repurposes soap from hotels that would otherwise end up in landfills.
The Global Soap Project collects unused bars of soap from hotels around the world and reprocesses it into new bars that are given to populations at risk of sanitation and hygiene-related disease.
In addition to donating soap from across our portfolio of hotels, Hilton Worldwide is investing $1.3 million over the next three years and providing our operational expertise and understanding of global supply chains to help expand the Global Soap Project's processing and distribution capabilities. As a member of the Global Soap Project's Board of Directors, we are also actively participating in the development of the organization's strategy and growth.
Reduce, reuse, repurpose
As the world's largest online donation marketplace, Good360 leverages the latest technological and social networking developments to create new and engaging online solutions that strengthen nonprofits and expand corporate citizenship. By providing product resources that help nonprofits fulfill their mission while helping companies give back to the communities where they live and work, Good360 keeps unsold products and excess inventory from going to landfills and instead, gives them a second life with those who need.
Hilton Worldwide's partnership with Good360 helps us live sustainably and work toward achieving our 20 percent waste reduction goal by connecting our hotels with opportunities to donate gently-used and surplus goods to organizations in need. By using LightStay™, Hilton Worldwide's proprietary sustainability performance system, each of our more than 3,900 hotels are able to enter goods available for donation into a tracking system that links to Good360's online product donation marketplace. After a product is listed, more than 22,000 charities have the opportunity to claim items as needed.
Awarding and supporting sustainability awareness
The Sundance Institute is a global, nonprofit organization dedicated to the discovery and development of independent artists and audiences in film and theater. As part of Hilton Worldwide's efforts to educate and engage our guests about sustainability, we are partnering with the Sundance Institute to support the Hilton LightStay™ Sustainability Award.
The Award, named after LightStay™, our proprietary system of sustainability performance, supports the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program, and awards grants on an annual basis to up to five documentary film projects focused on sustainability. The winning films have the potential to be showcased on Hilton Worldwide's in-room channels and websites, and to reach the 250 million guests who pass through our hotels each year.
The 2012 LightStay™ Sustainability Award winners, Island President and Solar Mamas, were chosen from more than 1,500 feature-length documentaries and 5,000 short film entries submitted to the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program, and showcase the connections between sustainability, economic growth, and community development.
Powering our properties, empowering our future
The EPA Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program that supports the organizational procurement of renewable power by offering expert advice, technical support, tools, and resources. Partnering with the EPA helps organizations lower the transaction costs of buying alternative sources of power, reduce carbon emissions, and communicate leadership to key stakeholders.
Electricity generation can be one of the largest impacts associated with an organization's operations, especially one as large and diverse as ours. Buying renewable energy is important to drive critical mass from a supply and technology standpoint as we work to manage both energy demand and efficiency. Hilton Worldwide is also leveraging LightStay™, our proprietary sustainability measurement system, which can track our hotels' purchases from sources of alternative energy.
Hilton Worldwide has been a member of the EPA partnership for the last few years and purchased over 300 million kWh of renewable power in 2012, the equivalent to the annual carbon dioxide emissions from electricity use of over 42,000 passenger cars and nearly 27,000 average American homes. Currently, Hilton Worldwide is ranked in the Top 10 purchasers of sustainable power in the United States, and is purchasing enough renewable power to meet 94% of our electricity use.
Empowering young people to CARE for the planet
The Arbor Day Foundation is one of the world's largest nonprofit tree-planting organizations, with nearly 1 million members planting 7 million trees per year. Founded in 1972, the organization works to advance the celebration of Arbor Day, the United States' oldest environmental holiday. For more than a decade, DoubleTree by Hilton has worked with more than 5 million grade school students in more than 200 communities, creating initiatives that get kids involved in making the world a better place. Together with partners such as the Arbor Day Foundation, we've planted more than 300,000 trees and created the "Exploring Trees Inside and Out" traveling museum exhibit designed to connect more than one million visitors with the wonders of nature.
The business of a better world
BSR works with its global network of nearly 300 member companies to build a just and sustainable world. From its offices around the world, BSR develops sustainable business strategies and solutions through consulting, research, and cross-sector collaboration.
In 2012, BSR and Hilton Worldwide launched the Center for Sustainable Procurement to help global business procurement managers integrate sustainability into their purchasing decisions—providing a unique set of research and information that will help make sense of the increasingly available product sustainability data. The Center will develop research, case studies, and surveys on topics such as incentives for category managers; metrics analysis that focuses on integrating sustainability into existing approaches such as "total cost of ownership"; educational guidelines, webinars, and web content for companies to share with internal sourcing teams; and one-on-one and collaborative consulting projects for a small group of BSR members to examine current purchasing processes, develop solutions for integrating sustainability into decisions, and share lessons collectively.
